How to Initiate a Credit Freeze in the State of Texas  E-mail

In the state of Texas, consumers can initiate a credit freeze without evidence of identity theft.  This is a law that was passed in 2007.   Below, you will find instructions on how to place a freeze on your credit report.

Remember that a credit freeze is the best protection available against identity theft.  The only downside is that you have to go through the property of "un-freezing" it when you need credit.  It literally puts a lock on your credit file.

In order to place a freeze on your credit file, you need to send a request by certified mail to each of the three national credit bureaus:

Experian – Experian Security Freeze, P.O. Box 9554AllenTX 75013 (include the previous addresses for the past two years, as well as the fee of $10.83 – includes sales tax).  You may also go to the Experian website to add a credit report security freeze

Equifax – Equifax Security Freeze, P.O. Box 105788AtlantaGA 30348 (include the fee of $10).  You may also go to the Equifax website to place a security freeze.

TransUnion – TransUnion Fraud Victim Assistance Department, P.O. Box 6790,FullertonCA 92834 (include fee of $10).  You may also go to the TransUnion website to place a security freeze.

Information for these credit agencies can also be found in the Consumer Resources section of the Prudent Money website (click here).

With this request to freeze your file, you must include the following:

  • Full name
  • Social Security number
  • Date of birth
  • Current address
  • Copy of a government-issued identification card (driver’s license, state or military ID card)
  • Copy of a utility bill, bank or insurance statement to verify your address

If you are a victim of identity theft, you should also include a copy of your police report.  Identity theft victims don't have to pay the fee to freeze their credit report.
