Have You Had Enough Financial Instability?

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. - Romans 12:2

I want to encourage you to consider something today. Statistics show that a good percentage of people are not in good financial shape. A new study from the Center for Financial Services Innovation found that just 28 percent of Americans are "financially healthy." The economic future is bleak for many – more from the study:


  • 44 percent of people said their expenses exceeded their income and they used credit to make ends meet

  • 42 percent said they have no retirement savings at all


There are tons of these surveys and studies being published. Unfortunately, they are all pointing to the same outcome. If you are one of those people, how about deciding to do something different? How about changing your financial habits? We are a result of our habits, both good and bad. If you have a lot of bad financial habits, it shows up in your bank accounts, your credit card statements, your retirement accounts, etc. If you have some successes, you can point to a series of habits that have supported those successful outcomes.


Your habits, both good and bad, define your future success with stewardship and money. Said another way, prudent stewardship is about practicing good financial habits. It is plain and simple. Habits start in mind. You have to renew your mind from bad habits to habits of stewardship. The Bible is the instruction manual of good habits. If you want to learn about how to deal with money, there couldn't be a better resource. There is a reason why money is written about or referenced more than any other subject in the Bible.

So, make a list of habits that work for you and the patterns you want to change. Take an honest self-assessment. The reality about habits is that as they are practiced over and over until they become second nature. Would rather have your second nature or your subconscious operating on bad or good habits? The good news is that bad habits can be reversed. It just takes practice and a renewal of the mind!
