The Most Important Take-Away from Last Week

I tend to forget significant lessons like, Never take anything for granted. This past week reminded me of another valuable principle: We are not always in control. Sometimes we assume we have control over the events that happen in our lives because we can intervene in events to change what is happening in our lives. In a twisted way, the ability to take action (whether we do or not) eases our fears.

Granted, showing up and being our best self and being the best can exert a minimal amount of control.

Mother nature disrupted my illusion of control and reminded me of something significant. During the black-outs due to last week's winter storm, the sound of power turning on (even if for a short while) was such tremendous relief. The sounds of appliances and electricity firing back up were music to my ears. Then just like that, as soon as it went off and everything goes dark, I fell into that vulnerable spot again.

You can take no amount of action when the power goes off; the water is not running, pipes that freeze up, pipes that burst, and the pool equipment freezes up. You have no control over how cold it gets and the integrity of the electricity grid. The only control you have is your dependence on God, your gratitude that sometimes you have to dig deep for due to a lack of understanding, and the pursuit of God’s peace in your life.

Last week reminded me of Philippians 4:6-7.

4:6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 4:7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Three words jump out of that verse:

Every- means everything, not just some things.

Anything- means anything, not just some things.

Transcends- your understanding - you do not have to understand,

just trust that He is guiding you along the way.

Hopefully, everything that happened last week was a once in a generational event. Just do not miss what God wants you to understand indeed.
