Biden's Education Secretary Vows to Shut Down the Largest Christian University in the United States

I could not tell you if Grand Canyon University, the largest Christian university in the United States, is guilty of what the Department of Education claims. Their punishment includes a $37 million fine and a threat to shut their doors.

Prudent Money contributor and college admissions expert John Hupalo was on the program the other day and said that these allegations - if true - would not warrant shutting a school down. After all, Grand Canyon University was already fined a $37.7 million fine imposed by the Department of Education. Let's put that into perspective. Penn State and the Jerry Sandusky scandal created a $2.4 million fine. Michigan State was fined $4.5 million for the Larry Nassar scandal.

I am not by any means justifying any wrongdoing by a university. It does make me wonder what the real motive of this case is. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona not only vowed to shut the university down but also to send a message by doing so.

Looking at the allegations and the severity of fines versus the fines levied against other universities for horrible acts of conduct, it seems there are two sets of standards. Is that standard the fact that Grand Canyon University just so happens to be the largest Christian university in the country? We are talking about a university that was started in 1949 and currently has an enrollment of over 100,000 students.

There have been plenty of cases where organizations have ripped people off in the name of God. That actually disgusts me. Let's just say that the allegations are true. Shouldn't the $37.7 million fine be enough punishment? Even that seems to be excessive.

Don't get me wrong, universities and organizations shouldn't get a pass because of their beliefs and faith. A fine is a reasonable punishment. On the other hand, is it reasonable to shut down a 75-year-old school with over 100,000 students enrolled (and just happens to be the largest Christian University in the Country)? You can decide how you feel about the optics.
